Destination Guide

ZEMUN

A historic riverside town with cobblestone streets, panoramic views and authentic Belgrade atmosphere.

Back to About Us

Zemun is one of the most charming and historically rich parts of Belgrade. Nestled on the right bank of the Danube, this former independent city retains its distinctive Central European character, setting it apart from the rest of the Serbian capital. Walking through Zemun feels like stepping back in time — Habsburg-era architecture, narrow winding streets, hilltop fortresses and a vibrant waterfront promenade all coexist in perfect harmony.

History

Zemun's history stretches back over two millennia. The Celts, Romans, Byzantines, Hungarians, Ottomans and Habsburgs all left their mark on this strategic point where the Sava meets the Danube. For centuries it served as a frontier between the Habsburg Empire and the Ottoman Empire — a role that shaped its distinctive multicultural identity.

In 1918 Zemun became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, and in 1934 it was formally merged with Belgrade. Despite this administrative union, Zemun has always preserved its own soul — its street names, its architecture and the proud spirit of its inhabitants.

Gardoš Tower Zemun – Millennium Tower on the hill above the Danube, near Mini City Hotel

Gardoš Hill is the historic heart of Zemun. At its summit stands the Millennium Tower (locally known as Gardoš Tower or Sibinjanin Janko Tower), built in 1896 to commemorate 1,000 years of the Hungarian state. From the top you get one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of the Danube, New Belgrade and the entire city.

Around the tower you'll find the old Zemun lanes — narrow cobblestone streets lined with historic houses, small churches and local craft shops. This area is perfect for a slow afternoon stroll.

Zemun Waterfront

The Zemun Quay (Zemunski kej) stretches along the Danube riverbank and is one of Belgrade's most beloved promenades. The quay is lined with restaurants serving fresh Danube fish, bars, ice cream parlours and benches overlooking the river. Sunsets here are truly spectacular.
